How One Young Leader Is Helping Families Experiencing Homelessness in Hunterdon County

Perhaps when you think about homelessness, you consider the most visible challenges: finding a safe place to sleep, securing food, or obtaining stable housing. While these needs are critically important, there are countless everyday necessities that many of us take for granted… things that become difficult or impossible to access when someone is experiencing housing instability.

Something as simple as doing laundry can become a significant challenge. For families and individuals experiencing homelessness, clean clothing is about much more than appearance. It affects health, confidence, employment opportunities, school attendance, and self-esteem. When someone is working hard to rebuild their life, access to basic hygiene and laundry supplies can help restore a sense of normalcy and dignity during an incredibly difficult time.

Unfortunately, without support, these challenges can compound. A parent struggling to keep clothing clean may face barriers to employment. A child may feel embarrassed attending school in stained or worn clothing. Individuals trying to secure housing or employment may find themselves facing additional obstacles simply because they lack access to basic resources many of us rarely think about.

This is why community support matters so deeply.

Recently, Family Promise of Hunterdon County was honored to receive a donation of laundry kits organized by Nehali as part of her Confirmation Service Project through Pattenburg United Methodist Church. After learning about the needs of local families and individuals experiencing housing instability, Nehali set out to make a meaningful difference.

Through fundraising efforts and community support, she assembled laundry kits containing essential items such as laundry detergent, dryer sheets, stain-removing wipes, hand sanitizer, fabric booster, lint rollers, laundry bags, and even quarters for laundromat use. Each kit was thoughtfully designed to provide practical assistance while helping recipients maintain cleanliness, confidence, and dignity.

At first glance, a laundry kit may seem like a simple collection of everyday items. In reality, it represents hours of planning, generosity, and community collaboration. It represents a young person who chose to see a need and do something about it. It represents neighbors coming together to support one another. And it reminds us that addressing homelessness isn’t only about providing housing… it is also about restoring dignity, meeting immediate needs, and ensuring that no one has to face hardship alone.

At Family Promise of Hunterdon County, we believe homelessness is not simply a housing issue; it is a community issue. Families facing housing instability often encounter a complex web of obstacles, including rising housing costs, financial hardship, job loss, medical expenses, transportation barriers, and limited access to supportive services. Without intervention, these challenges can escalate, placing families at greater risk of prolonged homelessness and making it more difficult to regain stability.

That is why our work focuses on both immediate needs and long-term solutions.

Through prevention programs, stabilization services, case management, community partnerships, and ongoing support, Family Promise of Hunterdon County helps families and individuals move toward safe, sustainable housing and greater self-sufficiency. Every success story is made possible through the collective efforts of donors, volunteers, faith communities, businesses, service organizations, and caring individuals who choose to become part of the solution.

Nehali’s project is a wonderful example of how meaningful change happens. One person identified a need. A church community provided encouragement and support. Donations were collected. Essential supplies were assembled. And together, those efforts will directly benefit members of our community who need them most. Ending homelessness is not something any one organization can accomplish alone. It takes partnerships. It takes compassion. It takes people willing to ask, “How can I help?”  Today, because of Nehali’s dedication and the support of Pattenburg United Methodist Church, local families and individuals will have access to resources that help preserve dignity, support daily living, and make difficult circumstances a little easier to navigate.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Nehali, her mentors, her church community, and everyone who contributed to this project. Your generosity reminds us that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a lasting impact… and that when a community comes together, hope grows stronger for everyone. Together, we can continue building a Hunterdon County where every family and every individual has the opportunity and support needed to achieve lasting stability and independence.

Nehali’s project also serves as a powerful reminder that every donation can make a tangible difference. A gift of $50 can provide enough supplies to create approximately five laundry kits, helping individuals maintain clean clothing and personal hygiene. $75 can support seven or eight kits, while $100 can fund enough supplies for ten complete laundry kits. A contribution of $250 can provide laundry and hygiene essentials for dozens of individuals while helping Family Promise respond to immediate client needs. At $500, a donor can help fund critical supplies and supportive services that assist families and individuals as they work toward stability and independence. Whether large or small, every gift helps remove barriers, restore dignity, and provide practical support for our neighbors experiencing homelessness and housing instability.
